Free metro travel announced for Chepauk match

Chennai Metro offers free rides for India vs Zimbabwe fans

Fans heading to watch India take on Zimbabwe in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match in Chennai on February 26 have received good news. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced free metro travel for spectators attending the match at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk.

The move aims to manage heavy match-day traffic and provide smooth transport for cricket fans. Under the special arrangement, spectators can travel free by simply showing their physical match tickets.

How the free travel works

According to CMRL, match tickets with unique QR codes will act as valid metro passes on February 26. Fans can scan these tickets at Automatic Fare Collection gates to enter the metro system.

Each ticket will allow one free round trip between any metro station and Government Estate station, which is the nearest stop to the stadium. The initiative has been launched in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to ensure hassle-free movement of spectators.

Metro services will also run longer than usual. The last trains from Government Estate station will depart at midnight — one towards Wimco Nagar Depot and another towards the Airport line. Entry to the station will close ten minutes before the final departure. After 11 pm, passengers wanting to switch to the Green Line can do so only at Chennai Central.

Must-win match for India

The transport boost comes as the Indian team faces a high-pressure situation in the tournament. India must defeat Zimbabwe to keep their semifinal hopes alive in the Super 8 stage.

The team is under pressure after suffering a heavy defeat against South Africa in Ahmedabad. Another loss could end India’s campaign, making the Chepauk clash extremely important for the hosts.

With free metro rides and extended services, authorities hope fans will turn up in large numbers to support the team in this crucial encounter.
